Astana is set to host the prestigious Ironman Kazakhstan 2023 long-distance race on July 2, which is expected to draw over 1,000 participants from around the globe, QazMonitor reports citing Kazakh Tourism.

On the eve of Capital City Day, both domestic enthusiasts and sports tourists from Brazil, Colombia, Germany, the US, and South Africa, among others, will compete in either the full-length race – a 3.86 km swim, a 180.25 km bike ride, and a 42.195 km marathon run – or the half-distance option, featuring a 1.9 km swim, a 90 km bike ride, and a 21.1 km run.

According to Alexey Sidorenko, the director of Ironman Kazakhstan, participants in these races will have the opportunity to qualify for prestigious tournaments worldwide.

“The highest number of international participants has registered for the half distance, with 824 people from 60 countries. Among them, 30 finishers will have the chance to test their skills at the World Championships in Lahti, Finland. And following the results of the full-distance race, the top 50 athletes will have a unique opportunity to compete at the inaugural World Championships, which will be held in [the French city of] Nice on September 10,” said Sidorenko.

Talgat Amanbayev, the chair of Kazakh Tourism, highlighted the positive impact of sports tourism emphasizing its contribution to the local economy.

“Last year, foreign participants spent an estimated $1.8 million during their trip to Kazakhstan. Following the Ironman event, many participants extended their stay to explore the country, visiting attractions like Burabay [National Park], Almaty, Turkistan, and other notable destinations. These global events not only showcase Astana but also introduce Kazakhstan to the world,” said Amanbayev.
