Kazakh schoolchildren have become bronze medalists at the international robotics championship Massachusetts FIRST LEGO League in the U.S., QazMonitor reports citing the ministry of education.

Held on June 9-11, the FIRST LEGO League in Massachusetts provided an opportunity for 700 students from 20 countries, aged 9 to 14, to conduct research and solve real-world problems, present their work and potential solutions to their peers, and learn from team coaches and mentors.

Students of the Nazarbayev Intellectual School of Physics and Mathematics in Shymkent won bronze in the Innovation Project category. The team presented a project aimed at converting surplus energy from wind generators and solar panels into electricity.

The team from the Murager boarding school in the Karagandy region won bronze in the main Champions Award category.

"We have been preparing for the championship for over six months. The three days of competition were very exciting for us, as the opponents were very strong. But we overcame our fears and were able to showcase our abilities. We held the lead in the robot game, presented our innovation project perfectly, and were united," said one of the participants, Akbar Yermekov.

In between competitions, students had the opportunity to visit engineering departments at top universities, including MIT, Boston University, and Harvard, and met with the academic staff.
