Kazakhstan will build a new airport in the Katon-Karagay district, QazMonitor reports citing Central Communication Service.
The Katon-Karagay district is most famous for its healing springs - "Rakhmanovsky springs" and deer antler therapy - which have earned the area a reputation of being a well-developed sanatorium-health resort.
In recent years, the region has been attracting tourists who come to folk music festivals organized on the ancient bedrock of early Turkic civilizations. Along with the interest shown by hikers and mountain climbers in Altai's coveted Belukha mountains, the natural riches and historical significance of Katon-Karagay are boosting its tourism potential year by year.
The Regional Department of Passenger Transport and Highways notes that, since 2018, the region has been working on modernizing the infrastructure of airports. The reconstruction of airports in Semey and Oskemen and the plane runway in Urdzhar have already been completed.
"We are now in the progress of acquiring an airfield certificate of eligibility. Flights will be launched as soon as we are certified," said Aizhan Rakhimbayeva, Deputy Head of the Department.
She also added the reconstruction of the airport in Zaisan will be completed by 2024.
