Turkic-speaking states have formed a commission that will oversee the creation of a common alphabet, QazMonitor reports citing Anadolu Agency. The decision aims to accelerate progress towards language unity among the states.
The formation of the commission was announced to the Organization of Turkic States (OTS) at the "Seminar on the Common Alphabet of the Turkic World" held in the Turkish city of Bursa and dedicated to the 90th anniversary of Language Day.
The seminar was chaired by Gürer Gülsevin, head of the Turkish Language Society (TDK) with the participation of the head of TDK's Council of Elders and deputy chair of Turkey's Justice and Development Party Binali Yıldırım.
Scholars from the Turkic states–Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic, Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan, and Turkiye– provided reports on the progress of the alphabet and language history in their countries, after which they noted the importance of accelerating the transition to a single alphabet.
The outcome of the seminar was the creation of the Commission on the Creation of a Common Alphabet under the OTS.
The Commission will include two members from each of the official structures dealing with language policy in the Turkic states. Participants will submit a report on the unified alphabet to the Council of Elders of the OTG.
The first meeting of the Commission will be held in the Kyrgyz Republic.
