The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan expressed its condolences to the victims of the earthquake in Afghanistan and their families.
The official statement said:
"We share the sorrow of the Afghan people for the numerous lives lost in the devastating earthquake in eastern Afghanistan. On behalf of the people and leadership of Kazakhstan we express our sincere condolences to the families of the victims and those affected by this disaster.
We wish the speedy recovery and the resumption of normal life."
The earthquake with magnitude of 5.9-6.1 (by different estimates) hit Afghanistan on Wednesday. It occurred about 44 kilometers from the southeastern city of Khost, near the border with Pakistan. The tremors were felt by about 119 million people in Pakistan, Afghanistan and India.
The death toll from Wednesday's earthquake in Afghanistan topped 1,000, with more than 1,500 injured, BBC reports referencing an official of the ruling Taliban. The death toll is expected to rise as word gets out from remote mountain villages. Helicopters are involved in rescue efforts to evacuate the wounded and deliver medicine and food.
The country's authorities have appealed for urgent help from international humanitarian organizations.
