President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev's recent visit to Almaty concluded with his participation in the capsule laying ceremony at the building spot of the new international terminal of the city’s airport.

During the ceremony, Serkan Kaptan, the CEO of TAV Airports Holding, Sani Shener, the deputy chairman of TAV Holding’s directors' board, and Ersoy Alp Er Tunga, the President of Almaty International Airport, presented the outlines of the investment project to the head of the state. After laying the capsule, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev declared the beginning of constructing the new international terminal.

In his speech, the head of the state called the Almaty airport “the air gates of Kazakhstan” – a  major strategic object.

"Building the new terminal will double the airport's throughput capacity, expanding it to 14 million passengers a year. The new terminal should be equipped with the most advanced technologies and meet international standards. Most importantly, all of the work must be completed on time."

The new terminal will only serve international flights, while the current terminal will be left for domestic flights.

Over $200 million were invested in the project. The deadline for the construction is set for summer 2024.
