Closing Strong: Last Week's Sports Achievements by Kazakh Athletes

December 25-31: triumphs in amateur boxing, archery, ice hockey, and wrestling

At the close of the year, Kazakh athletes showcased excellence across various sports in recent tournaments. From an impressive haul of 16 medals in an amateur boxing tournament in Baku to a resounding 5:1 victory by the HC Barys Astana over the HC Traktor Chelyabinsk, our athletes have concluded the year with an impressive showcase of skill and determination.

The Ministry of Tourism and Sports shared a digest of the latest sports achievements:

Kazakh boxers clinched 16 medals in the Abbas Agalarov Youth Memorial Tournament in Baku, Azerbaijan. Competing against 97 athletes from Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Russia, Saudi Arabia, and the European Boxing Confederation, the Kazakh national team secured second place in the overall standings with a remarkable haul of 4 gold, 5 silver, and 7 bronze medals.

In Batumi, Georgia, the international archery tournament concluded with Kazakh athletes Samira Zhumagulova, Ayazhan Yakhina, and Alikhan Tuyak clinching first place. In the individual archery, Raiymbek Maikybaev won gold, while Samira Zhumagulova finished second. Alikhan Tuyak earned gold in the cadet division, and Ayazhan Yakhina secured silver. In team standings, the duo of Raiymbek Maikybaev and Abdumalik Ganiev emerged victorious, while Alikhan Tuyak and Ayazhan Yakhina clinched the top prize in the mixed team category.

Astana Hockey Club Barys, competing in the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL), secured a victory by defeating the Russian team Traktor (Chelyabinsk) on home ice with a score of 5:1. Arkady Shestakov, David Sklenicka, Rudolf Cerveny, and Anthony Camara showcased remarkable precision in scoring, propelling the team to its third consecutive triumph.

Kazakh wrestlers have made a strong start to the year by dominating global rankings across various weight categories. Rizabek Aitmukhan, Kazakhstan's first world champion in freestyle wrestling, currently holds the top position in the United World Wrestling (UWW) rankings for the 92 kg weight category.

Additionally, Zhamila Bakbergenova has risen to the top of the UWW rankings in the women’s 72 kg weight category. Her noteworthy achievements include three consecutive victories at the Asian Championship, along with a bronze medal secured at the World Championship in Serbia in September 2023.
