Labor Trends in Kazakhstan Reveal Economy Sectors with Most Employees

Overall, 2.2 million people are self-employed, while 6.9 million work as hired employees

In Q2 2023, Kazakhstan's economy employed about 9.6 million people, with approximately 2.2 million self-employed and 6.9 million working on regular employment, QazMonitor reports citing the Bureau of National Statistics.

The labor distribution across sectors was as follows: trade – 16.6%, education – 12.9%, industry – 12.3%, agriculture – 12.2%, construction – 7.1%, transport and warehousing – 7%, healthcare and social services – 6.2%, public administration, defense, and compulsory social security – 5.8%, other services – 3.9%, professional, scientific and technical activities – 3.1%, administrative and support services – 3%, accommodation and food services – 2.4%, financial and insurance activities – 2.2%, information and communications – 2%, real estate – 1.6%, art and entertainment – 1.5%.

Compared to the second quarter of the previous year, there were declines in the number of employees in the following sectors: in agriculture – drop of 19,000 people, real estate operations – 18,900 people, construction – 9,500 people, industrial sector – 7,000 people, administrative and support services – 6,400 people, and art and entertainment – 6,300 people.

The bureau specified that in other sectors of the domestic economy, the number of employees increased.
