World no.3 Elena Rybakina is through to the quarter-finals of Wimbledon after her opponent in the 4th round, world no.13 Beatriz Haddad Maia, was forced to retire midway through the match due to a sustained injury, QazMonitor reports.
The match between the Kazakh and Brazilian tennis players ended 4:1, lasting 21 minutes. During that time, Rybakina scored three aces and committed one double fault to her opponent's none.
Notably, this situation is the reverse of what happened in April during the Stuttgart Open when Rybakina had to withdraw from the match with Haddad Maia due to a lower back issue. In the quarter-finals, the defending Wimbledon champion will face either world no. 6 and the tournament's previous year's runner-up, Ons Jaber, or world no. 9 Petra Kvitova.
