Ministry of Digital Development, Innovations and Aerospace Industry announced that Kazakhstan may change its calling code to +77 instead of +997, QazMonitor reports.
During a working trip to the U.S., Digital Minister Bagdat Mussin met with Doreen Bogdan-Martin, the secretary-general of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), to discuss the issue of changing Kazakhstan’s dialing code.
"It isn’t difficult to switch to +997, as this number was put on reserve for us. But I suggested the ITU to move us to +77. They, however, cannot make such a decision in one day, as it is an international organization and must hold meetings regarding this kind of request. We were promised that they would discuss this proposal," Mussin said.
The initial plan was to switch to the calling code +997 in January 2023. At the moment, Kazakhstan is assigned to Zone 7 and uses the same +7 code as Russia.
