A wind power plant (WPP) with a 100MW capacity started operating in the newly formed Abay region's Ayagoz district, Qazmonitor reports citing the Energy Ministry. President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev ordered the WPP's implementation in line with the government's aim to generate at least 2,400 MW of renewable energy sources (RES) by 2025.

RES is being actively integrated into the overall energy system of the country. In addition to opening wind farms in the southern and western regions, trials with solar power grids are being launched in district schools. In the next ten years, Kazakhstan also plans to build a nuclear energy station in the Almaty region.

The implementation of this project in Abay will allow for the production of about 300 million kWh of additional electricity in the energy network, as well as the creation of about 15 permanent jobs.

The concept of Kazakhstan's transition to a green economy and the Kazakhstan-2050 Strategy recently approved the objective of bringing the share of renewable energy to 6% in 2025, 15% in 2030 and 50% in 2050 (taking into account alternative sources).
