On May 17, Ambassador of the Republic of Kazakhstan Nurlan Zhalgasbaev met with the vice-chancellor of Jawaharlal Nehru University Santishree D Pandit to discuss enhancing bilateral cooperation and the possibility of opening the university’s campus in Kazakhstan.

The main focus of the decision was on training Kazakh specialists in the field of IT technologies, while for the university, this presents an opportunity to expand Indian higher education internationally. Senior university officials said a detailed proposal to the varsity is expected from the Kazakh side, Times of India reports.

In January 2022, President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev instructed to open in Kazakhstan at least five branches of reputable foreign universities by 2025. The JNU was rated sixth among all institutions and second among universities of India in 2018. It has fewer than 10,000 students which is considered to be small for an Indian university, with a highly competitive admissions system.
