Kazakhstan's team of young chess players claim one gold and one bronze medal at the FIDE World Youth U-16 Chess Olympiad in Nakhchivan, Azerbaijan, QazMonitor reports with reference to KazTag.
The competition took place from October 1-11 among participants under the age of 16. Team Kazakhstan finished in the top four in the overall ranking, overtaking the Indian and Iranian teams. First place went to chess players from Turkey, second place to Uzbekistan, and third place to tournament hosts Azerbaijan.
Sauat Nurgaliyev claimed the gold medal and Imangali Akhilbay earned the bronze medal. Pavel Kotsur, the team’s coach, said the same lineup will compete again next year since the players are between ages 12 and 14.
He commented: "We worked hard until the end. We had a good game. Most importantly, the team demonstrated a very high level of training.”
