The leader of Kazakhstan's judo team, Yeldos Smetov, became a bronze medalist at the world championship in Tashkent. In his main fight of the tournament, he met with Dilshodbek Baratov of Uzbekistan (60 kg category). The main time ended without any points. However, Smetov earned the winning point in the extra time.
In the fight for third place, Abiba Abuzhakynova faced Mari Di Vargas Ley (Chile) in the 48 kg category. In extra time her opponent received three warnings, which brought victory to the Kazakh athlete.
