The debut feature film “Brothers” directed by Darkhan Tulegenov received a prize at the prestigious Oldenburg International Film Festival, which took place from September 14 to September 18 in Germany, QazMonitor reports citing Kazakhcinema.

The film was awarded a special jury prize – “Spirit of Cinema”. “Brothers” became the first Kazakh film presented at the Oldenburg International Film Festival. It has also been included in the official programs of festivals in the USA, Canada, Russia, and Albania. The film will be released for domestic distribution at the beginning of next year.

The plot tells the dramatic story of an orphanage graduate Akzhol, who is drawn into the criminal world and is unaware of the existence of his brother. Upon meeting, the brothers begin their search for their father in hopes of finding a family.

“I have a brother, so I just wanted to explore this topic. I thought: what if brothers, who did not know about each other's existence, cross paths and develop a shared hope for the future,” said Tulegenov.

The International Independent Film Festival in Oldenburg, also known as the European Sundance, is one of the leading indie film festivals in the world. This festival is aimed at supporting the creativity of independent filmmakers from all over the world.
