The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) will support Kazakhstan in reducing methane emissions as part of the country’s pledge to achieve its 2060 carbon neutrality target and goals of the Paris Agreement, QazMonitor reports with reference to the bank's press service.

A memorandum of mutual cooperation and support was signed on September 15 by Kazakh Minister of Ecology, Geology and Natural Resources Serikkali Brekeshev and Alain Pilloux, EBRD Vice-President.

EBRD Head of Kazakhstan Huseyin Ozhan said: “The EBRD is very proud to have supported so many important initiatives In Kazakhstan. Thirty years on, this is a very different operation and, working with the authorities, we are helping to make this country greener, more inclusive and more digital. There are many more challenges ahead and we look forward to addressing them together.”

The EBRD intends to support Kazakhstan's efforts in reducing methane emissions and improving monitoring, reporting and verification in various sectors, with a focus on the key sectors of energy and gas transportation, agriculture, solid waste and wastewater management.

Under the memorandum, the parties are ready to start the joint implementation of methane reduction projects and consider the use of new instruments for regulating greenhouse gas in accordance with international best practices and standards.
