The proposal by members of Parliament to rename the capital of Kazakhstan to Astana was included in the draft Constitution with the approval of the Head of State, said presidential spokesman Ruslan Zheldibay.
"The President considers the decisive role of N.A. Nazarbayev in strengthening the modern statehood of Kazakhstan and the establishment of the capital a historical fact. Therefore, other landmarks named after the First President should retain their names," the spokesman said.
Earlier, it was reported that a group of members of Parliament proposed to return the capital of Kazakhstan to its former name, Astana.
According to Zheldibay, Tokayev was "informed about this initiative by deputies, who, in turn, cited the proposals that were repeatedly expressed during public meetings, as well as in numerous appeals by citizens during the period of the referendum."
