Adilkhan Yerzhanov’s “Goliath”, a noir film about crime and corruption in a remote Kazakh village, won the best actor award at the 79th Venice International Film Festival, QazMonitor reports. Berik Aitzhanov and Daniyar Alshinov were crowned best actors.

There were 23 films competing in the Orizzonti Extra (New Horizon) program at the festival, which took place on Lido Island from August 31 to September 10. The film category showcases the current trends in world cinematography and introduces new directors from all parts of the globe.

“Goliath” is set in Karatas, a small village that has long suffered under the rule of the impulsive and violent Poshayev. He provides shelter and employment in exchange for absolute loyalty and submission. One day, the wife of a poor man, Arzu, reports the crimes in Karatas to the police, dooming the family to face the despot’s wrath.

The film stars Berik Aitzhanov, Daniyar Alshinov, Almira Tursyn, and Erken Gubashev. Russian actors Dmitry Chebotarev and Alexandra Revenko also participated in the production.
