The Mangistau region plans to create three nature reserves near the Caspian Sea for the conservation of the Caspian seal population, QazMonitor reports citing Khabar24.

Around ₸40 million were allocated from the regional budget to address the ecological issues surrounding the Caspian Sea.

The regional government announced plans to create protected animal habitats that will be actively cleaned from domestic waste. In the past year, over 53 kg of marine debris were collected on Kulaly Island, half of which were fishing nests.

Endemic to the region, the Caspian seal is considered to be an endangered species, with fishing nets being the main reason for their mass death. From the beginning of this year, 220 seals have been found dead on the seashore.
