General Motors plans to set up a complete knocked down assembly line in Kazakhstan, where it will be able to produce several models of its cars, said Deputy Prime Minister of Kazakhstan Roman Sklyar during a government meeting, QazMonitor reports.

Vice president of General Motors Johnny Saldanha visited our country and expressed [GM’s] desire to set up a complete knocked down assembly line of several models of cars. I think this is normal - this is development, and an investment. They will produce cars both for the domestic market and export.

Earlier Toppress.kz reported that Kazakh automobile manufacturer ALLUR has become a strategic partner of General Motors International and Uzbekistan's largest carmaker, Uzavtosanoat.

GM International Vice President Johnny Saldana and Chairman of the Board of Uzavtosanoat Shavkat Umurzakov met with ALLUR management and discussed results of joint activities in the Kazakh market, as well as plans on further development of industrial cooperation and deepening of localization at the production site in Kostanay.

The parties agreed on measures to combat current challenges in the region's automotive market, which primarily concern the elimination of machinery shortage in Kazakhstan, creation of a modern production base in the region, and transition from dependence on imported components.
