In an interview with Compas On The Beat, Gennady Golovkin was asked about his thoughts on retiring after his third and last match against the Mexican fighter Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, which will take place on September 17, Qazmonitor reports citing Sports.kz.

The publication noted that the IBF and WBA super middleweight champion, who turned 40 this year, still looked energetic and healthy, and wondered whether the anticipated match may be his final.

“No, I don’t think so. I don’t like to think that way, and I hope it won’t be the last since I have big plans for the future,” answered Golovkin.

Golovkin proceeded to address the speculations surrounding the topic of his retirement with a surprising remark.

“Yeah, my career ended a while ago, at the start of the pandemic,” he said. He didn’t elaborate any further, only adding “now, I just have to do what I have to do”.

The athlete also revealed that he wants to have one last fight in his home country before even considering leaving the ring for good.

In the entirety of his career, Golovkin had only one home match in Kazakhstan – in 2010 in Nur-Sultan against Columbia’s Nilson Tapia.
