On July 23, Nur-Sultan hosted the 2022 Asia Triathlon Junior and U23 Championships for the first time, Qazmonitor reports citing Olympic.kz. The large-scale sporting event was planned back in 2021 but did not take place due to the epidemiological situation in the world.
More than 100 participants from 13 countries, including Japan, Korea, Hong Kong, and China, took part in the competition. Kazakhstan was represented by 15 athletes.
In the men's U23 category, Daryn Konysbaev took second place with 1 hour 52 minutes and 9 seconds. Hong Kong's Oscar Coggins set a high pace from the start of the race and finished three stages of the triathlon in 1 hour 51 minutes and 14 seconds. Qing Chen of China finished third.
In the women's U23 category, athletes from Japan and China dominated the whole race. Japan's Izumi Ikeguchi took first place with a time of 2 hours 10 minutes and 26 seconds. China's Wen Wei and Xinyi Lin got silver and bronze medals.
The Junior category was represented by athletes under the age of 19. In the men's events, first and second place went to Japanese athletes Amu Omuro and Takuto Oshima respectively. Kazakhstan's Yegor Krupyakov came in third.
In U19 Women's category, Japan's Mako Hirazumi took gold and Manami Hiyashi snagged the silver medal. Charlotte Hall from Hong Kong won the bronze medal.
