Historic Win for Kazakh Tennis: Elena Rybakina Became Wimbledon Champion

This is the first Ladies' Singles Grand Slam tournament won by Kazakhstan

Kazakh tennis history has been made today, as Elena Rybakina became the champion at Wimbledon (3-6, 6-2, 6-2), QazMonitor reports.

In the final match against Ons Jabeur, Kazakhstani athlete lost the first 33-minute set (3-6) .

The second set kept the audience bating their breaths for the whole 40 minutes, as Rybakina got the competitive edge over the Tunisian player and lead 5-1, eventually winning the set 6-2. 

The final set of the match on the Centre Court was a nerve-wrecking seesaw. Rybakina won the first two games, but Jabeur broke her streak. To the excitement and relief of all Kazakhstani fans, Rybakina showed confidence and claimed the champion title in the end (6-2).

As the Ladies’ Singles champion of the tournament Elena Rybakina won $2,500,000 of prize money and the prestigious Venus Rosewater Dish.

Born in Russia, Rybakina has represented Kazakhstan since 2018. When asked about her background, she said she has been playing for Kazakhstan for a long time.

“I am really happy representing Kazakhstan. They believed in me. There is no more question about how I feel,” she told the media.
