A police officer from Kazakhstan, Zarina Zhumanbek, saved a child moments before a fatal accident while coming back from classes in Russia, Polisia.kz reports.

On May 16, a senior police lieutenant was on her way to the dormitory after her studies, when she saw a woman with two young children crossing the streetcar tracks. A gust of wind blew the cap off one of the girls' heads and fell on the tracks. The girl ran back to pick it up, not noticing the oncoming tram.

Taking a quick assessment of the situation, Zarina practically snatched the girl from under the tram wheels and took her to safety. The lieutenant calmed the frightened child before handing her over to her mother.

Witnesses to the heroic act were students of the Academy who also happened to be at the tram stop. They informed the management of the educational institution about the incident.

"This act speaks of the highest level of professionalism, courage and readiness in extreme situations," said Grigory Skripkin, one of the leaders of the Management Academy of the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs. He awarded Zarina with a certificate of honor in a ceremony held at the academy.

I could not do otherwise. At that moment, I thought only about how to rescue the child. As an adjunct of the Academy, I always strived to represent my homeland - the Republic of Kazakhstan - in another country with honor and dignity. I want to work for the benefit of my country.
