Shanghai Cooperation Organization’s (SCO) Secretary-General Zhang Ming expressed support for the national referendum on June 5 and wished the people of Kazakhstan a bright future, Tengrinews reports.
The Shanghai Cooperation Organization, otherwise known as the Shanghai Pact, is a multilateral association to ensure political, economic and military stability and security across the Eurasian region.
Zhang Ming headed the SCO mission of 17 foreign observers who visited 26 polling stations. “It appeared that the preparatory work for the referendum was well organized. The voting process went in an orderly and calm manner. During conversations with voters, we were impressed by their enthusiasm and active interest in the referendum," Zhang Ming said.
Based on observations, he predicted a large turnout for the referendum, which in the preliminary counting of ballots accounted for 68.44% of eligible voters. “We will strictly fulfil our mission and make a notable contribution to the future of New Kazakhstan and the happiness of its people," he added.
The Secretary-General also noted that he managed to get acquainted with some members of the referendum commissions and observers at the voting sites.
"We noticed how strictly they do their work; they are very serious about it. I have the utmost respect for their diligence. With all my heart, I want to wish the people of Kazakhstan a wonderful future and wish prosperity to New Kazakhstan," Zhang Ming concluded in his message.
