Kazakhstan Will Pay More Than 1.3B Tenge to Victims of Political Repression

Victims of repression who are on pension or have disabilities receive extra aid

To commemorate Remembrance Day for victims of political repression and famine on May 31, the Ministry of Labor and Social Protection announced that more than 1.3 billion tenge will be allocated to victims this year, Tengrinews reports.

Compensations and allowances

Since 2003, 16.1 billion tenge have been paid to survivors in Kazakhstan as lump-sum cash compensations and special state allowances. 

For the period from 2005 to 2021, 13.2 billion tenge was paid from the national budget. In 2022, the plan is to pay a state aid of 1.3 billion tenge. As of 1 May 2022, the number of victims of mass political repression and victims of political repression receiving social assistance was 29,648 people.

In addition, among those affected, individuals who have disabilities or are pensioners, regardless of other types of social payments, are paid a special state allowance in the amount of 1.07 monthly calculation index (in 2022 - 3,403 tenge).

Political repression and famine

According to statistics,100,000 people were convicted in Kazakhstan in the period from 1921 to 1954; 25,000 of them were subjected to capital punishment - shooting.

Millions of Kazakhs became victims of famine in 1932-33. One of the largest gulags - ALZHIR, Steplag, Karlag - were set up in the territory of modern-day Kazakhstan. During the years of repressions, more than 5 million people were exiled to camps in Kazakhstan. According to some data, the actual number of prisoners significantly exceeds the official figure.

Between 1930 and 1940, millions of Soviet citizens were deported to Kazakhstan. In the autumn of 1937, hundreds of thousands of Koreans, Turks, Iranians, Kurds, and Azerbaijanis were relocated. Also during the Second World War, Germans, Greeks, Chechens, Ingush, Karachais, Balkars, Crimean Tatars, and other peoples were deported to the country. Their number is estimated at 1.2 million people.
