Zhamila Bakbergenova received the Asian Wrestling champion title after defeating all her opponents in the 72 kg weight class. "I went with a clear goal to become champion because I came second last year. Each fight was tough, however, the first and last meetings were the hardest," Zhamila said.
On Thursday, Zhamila’s twin sister Madina (68 kg) won over the Tokyo 2020 bronze medalist from Kyrgyzstan and got the gold medal in her weight category.
“I’m grateful to have achieved my goal. We studied and prepared for each opponent. The coach set new tactics for each meeting. I followed it and everything went according to plan. There are big competitions ahead and I plan to get ready for them.”
Overall, four female athletes from Kazakhstan got their medals in the championship so far. Two other Kazakh wrestlers Gulmaral Yerkebayeva (76 kg) and Zhyldyz Eshimova (53 kg) went up against Mongolian athletes and got bronze medals.
