Kazakhstan and Sri Lanka plan to establish embassies in Colombo and Astana reciprocally, QazMonitor reports citing the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

What happened: On April 11, Deputy Foreign Minister Alibek Bakayev met in Astana with Aruni Wijewardane, Secretary to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Sri Lanka, for the second round of bilateral political consultations.

  • The parties confirmed their readiness to establish mutual diplomatic missions in the near future.

  • The Embassy of Sri Lanka established in Astana will be the country’s first resident diplomatic mission in Central Asia.

  • The parties also discussed the possibility of implementing a visa waiver agreement. Tourist arrivals from Kazakhstan to Sri Lanka grew due to the resumption of direct charter flights between the countries.

Following the meeting, the parties decided to hold the third round of political consultations in 2025. Additionally, the Kazakh side invited the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Sri Lanka, Ali Sabry, to participate in the upcoming Astana International Forum scheduled for June 13-14 in the capital.
