Where Did Kazakhstan Send $5 Million in Humanitarian Aid in 2023?

The State Revenue Committee has reported that during January–December 2023, Kazakhstan provided humanitarian aid totaling $5 million to other countries. This amount represents a decrease of 2.4 times compared to the aid sent during the same period in 2022, QazMonitor reports citing finprom.kz.

Aid sent: In January–December 2023, the volume of humanitarian aid received from abroad experienced a notable increase, rising by 3.4% to reach a total of $25.6 million.

Over half of the humanitarian aid sent by Kazakhstan was food, totaling $2.8 million, marking a significant increase of 44.1% y/y. Clothing and footwear donations amounted to $244.7 thousand, a third less than in 2022. Another $89.7 thousand was allocated for machinery and equipment, reflecting a decrease of 33.9%. The remaining portion, totaling $1.8 million, was attributed to other goods.

Aid received and who sent it: Nearly half of the humanitarian aid received by Kazakhstan in January-December 2023 was medicines, totaling $12.1 million (a 3.7% rise compared to 2022 figure). Another $501.1 thousand was in the form of clothing and footwear, marking a decrease of 2.2 times y/y. Machinery and equipment accounted for $30.7 thousand, representing a year-over-year drop of 7.5 times. Other goods totaled $13 million.

The majority of the foreign aid received by Kazakhstan last year was from Belgium — $20.7 million, Following that was Germany at $3.6 million. Italy sent $714.7 thousand, while China and Romania provided $271.3 thousand and $206.6 thousand, respectively. The five countries accounted for 99.5% of all humanitarian aid imports by Kazakhstan in 2023.

  • Syria — $11.5 thousand
