Kazakh tennis player Amir Omarkhanov, currently ranking 27th globally (ITF) among junior players, has achieved a historic milestone by reaching the quarterfinals of the Australian Open Junior Championships, QazMonitor reports citing Kazakhstan Tennis Federation.
In the third-round match, Omarkhanov secured a victory over Jangjun Kim, the 26th-ranked junior player worldwide. The first set concluded with a score of 6:3 in favor of Amir, but Kim rebounded in the second with a score of 7:5. In the decisive third set, Omarkhanov defeated his opponent, securing a convincing 6:0 victory in just 19 minutes.
Amir is now set to face Mees Rottgering from the Netherlands (25 ITF Juniors) in the quarterfinals.
Earlier, Kazakhstan's Asylzhan Arystanbekova, partnered with Yuliya Perapekhina from Belarus, also advanced to the quarterfinals of the Junior Australian Open in the doubles category.
