Asian Games Digest: Kazakhstan Wins Fourth Gold in Hangzhou

The canoe duo of Sergey Yemelyanov and Timur Khaidarov bested teams from Japan and Iran in the 500-meter double race

On October 2, Kazakh canoers Sergey Yemelyanov and Timur Khaidarov earned gold medals in the 500-meter double race at the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou, besting teams Japan and Iran, QazMonitor reports.

The 1:49.010 race concluded with the fourth gold medal for the national team, advancing Kazakhstan to tenth place in the overall standings, behind North Korea and ahead of Indonesia. Currently, the national team has four gold, seven silver, and twenty-five bronze medals, totaling thirty-six.

Notably, these aren't the first medals awarded today in the canoe and kayak contests, as the duo of Mariya Brovkova and Rufina Iskakova secured second place in the women's canoe double 500-meter race, while Irina Podoynikova and Olga Shmeleva also clinched second place in the women's kayak double 500-meter race.

Furthermore, in today's men's singles events, Kiril Tubayev and Timofey Yemelyanov earned bronze medals in the kayak and canoe 1,000-meter races, respectively.

On September 23–October 8, the Chinese city of Hangzhou is hosting the 19th Asian Games, which feature the participation of forty-five national teams and independent athletes competing under the neutral flag. Currently, China leads the tournament rankings in first place with 139 gold medals and 251 medals in total, followed by Japan in second place and South Korea in third place, with 30 gold medals each and 116 and 128 total medals, respectively.
