Kazakhstan Wins Silver at 2023 Asian Fencing Championships

The team managed to defeat opponents from the Philippines, Uzbekistan, and South Korea but lost to Japan in the finals

The national men's fencing team won a silver medal in the team epee competition at the 2023 Asian Fencing Championships in the Chinese city of Wuxi, QazMonitor reports citing the ministry of culture and sport.

On June 17-22, Wuxi hosted the Asian Fencing Championships attracting over 400 athletes from 20 countries who were competing for a chance to participate in this year's World Fencing Championships in Milan and to qualify for the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.

The national men's team comprises Ruslan Kurbanov, Elmir Alimzhanov, Vadim Sharlaimov, and Yerlik Sertay. In their first match against epee fencers from the Philippines, the team managed to secure a victory with a score of 45:37. They then defeated their opponents from Uzbekistan (45:40) and, in the semi-finals, overcame South Korea (42:36). However, team Kazakhstan lost to Japan in the finals with a score of 45:25.

Overall, Kazakhstan finished the 2023 Asian Fencing Championships in 7th place in the group standings, earning one silver medal.
