On May 22, the former chair of the national security committee, Karim Massimov, filed an appeal after being found guilty as the main perpetrator of the January events in 2022, QazMonitor reports citing Kazinform.

The press service of the Astana city court confirmed the information circulated in the media regarding the appeal, but the case had yet to reach the appeals court. This is due to the case being classified as 'Top Secret', and other information is not to be disclosed.

On April 24 of this year, the specialized inter-district criminal court of Astana charged Massimov with accusations of state treason and forcible seizure of power, as well as abuse of power and abuse of office. By the court's decision, he was found guilty and sentenced to 18 years of imprisonment with property confiscation, along with a lifetime deprivation of the right to hold office in the government service.
