KazMunayGas and Italian oil and gas company Eni S.p.A. (ENI) agreed in principle to jointly construct a 120MW hybrid power plant in the Mangistau region, QazMonitor reports.

Magzum Mirzagaliyev, chairman of the board of KazMunayGas, met with Director of Exploration and Production of the Natural Resources Division Luca Vignati in Astana to discuss the continuation of the energy cooperation deal signed between the companies in 2021.

The power plant will operate on renewable energy sources – wind and solar – as well as gas in order to stabilize the energy supply and save gas resources.

Mirzagaliyev said the project is part of a strategic task set out by the president to develop green technology in Kazakhstan. He noted: “In addition to strengthening the energy security of the region, its important dividends will attract inflow of investments and creation of new jobs.”

The production and supply of electricity to the target facilities – in particular, the facilities of Ozenmunaigas and the Kazakh gas processing plant – are expected to eliminate the risk of emergency stoppages due to frequent power outages.

The $300 million project is scheduled to be completed in 2023–2025. The solar power generation unit is scheduled for commissioning in 2024, and the wind and gas power generation in 2025.
