Kazakhstan’s Elena Rybakina has beaten the current world no.1 player Iga Swiatek and reached the quarterfinals of the Australian Open, QazMonitor reports.
This is the third time she has reached the quarterfinals of Grand Slam tournaments. The first time was two years ago at Roland Garros and then last year when she continued on to become the champion of Wimbledon.
The victory against Swiatek has helped Elena Rybakina move up from the 25th position and enter the top 20 of the WTA Women's Tennis Association Live Rating. She is now ranked at number 16 with 1,945 points.
Rybakina's next match is scheduled for January 24. She will go against Jelena Ostapenko of Latvia to advance to the semifinals.
