The human rights commissioner (ombudsman) Artur Lastayev held a meeting with a representative of the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) in Kazakhstan Arthur van Diesen, QazMonitor reports citing the Central Communications Service.

The position of an ombudsman is an institution for protecting human rights from government abuse, ensuring the development of legislation, and developing and implementing educational programs. The institution ensures Kazakhstan’s conformity to international commitments under the ratified Conventions of the United Nations.

The UN Children’s Fund is the organization’s agency that provides humanitarian and developmental aid to children around the world.

Mr. van Diesen informed the Kazakh side about UNICEF’s activities in the country. The representative noted the steady improvement of key indicators reflecting the realization of children's rights and well-being in Kazakhstan.

The parties discussed the agency’s program for the country and identified priority areas for joint project activities to strengthen the nationwide architecture to achieve Sustainable Development Goals.

Ombudsman Lastayev assured the international representative of continued cooperation with the UNICEF Office to best ensure the protection of children's rights and interests.
