Kazakhstan and Japan are planning to cooperate on climate change mitigation, QazMonitor reports citing Central Communications Service.

Minister of ecology and natural resources Zulfiya Suleimenova and parliamentary vice-minister for foreign affairs of Japan Yuumi Yoshikawa discussed issues of mutual cooperation in the field of ecology.

The parties expressed interest in cooperating within the framework of the Joint Credit Mechanism (JCM). Established in 2011 in Japan, the mechanism promotes the spread of advanced technologies and infrastructure to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, as well as the implementation of measures to mitigate climate change.

The parties also discussed signing a Memorandum of Cooperation (MoU) regarding the mechanism. As of now, the island nation closely works with 25 countries under the JCM, including Thailand, Vietnam, Uzbekistan, and other countries.

The program’s loans are issued on the basis of quantitative indicators of greenhouse gas emission reduction or absorption, achieved by the parties involved in the project.
