Barley export from Kazakhstan to China in July-November 2022 period amounted to 121,260 tons, QazMonitor reports citing the Ministry of Trade and Integration.

This figure is 9.3 times higher than in the 2021/2022 marketing year when the country exported only 13,000 tons of crops to China. In terms of the current volume, China ranks second after Iran (237,500 tons) in the procurement of Kazakh barley.

The Bureau of National Statistics estimated national barley stocks at 1.98 million tons by December 1, 2022.

Exporters anticipate low demand in the current 2022/2023 marketing year for the export of barley. The estimates place foreign demand at about 800,000 tons.

In 2022, agricultural producers sowed barley in an area of 2.15 million hectares which is the lowest since 2014. The average yield was 15 centners per hectare and the gross barley yield was 3.23 million tons, which is the lowest since 2016 (excluding the last dry season).

The peak of barley exports from Kazakhstan was in 2018/2019, when the harvest of 3.82 million tons enabled the country to ship 1.79 million tons of barley to foreign markets.
