On May 27, Aisultan Seitov has posted a teaser of his upcoming feature film Qash (Run), which aims to shed light on one of the darkest periods of Kazakh history. The film premiere is due in fall 2022.
The story is set in the 1930s during the harrowing period of colonialism and nation-wide famine. The protagonist is a gravedigger who has to make a difficult decision that will seal the fate of his entire village.
"We faced many obstacles in the making of the film. And they weren't limited to the creation of the movie only. Our film challenged the words of the distributor: 'We don't believe in a Kazakh that's not a comedy. But we believe that Kazakh films can be diverse. We believe that cinematography can evolve. We believe in QASH. And most of all we believe in the audience," Aisultan wrote on Instagram.
Earlier, afisha.ru reported that the movie will be shown in cinemas exclusively in the Kazakh language.
Aisultan Seitov is rising up to be a steady household name in Kazakh cinematography, with his portfolio boasting works with some of the biggest music artists in the world. The 25-year old director and producer has shot music videos for Migos, Young Thug, Travis Scott, H.E.R., 21 Savage, and J. Cole, among others.
