As part of The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) initiative to promote Central Asian Cultural Heritage, the UNESCO Cluster Office in Almaty has published a series of 52 illustrations depicting cultural heritage sites, traditions, and customs belonging to Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, and Tajikistan.
The flashcards are accompanied by brief introductory texts on UNESCO Almaty's official Facebook and Instagram pages under the hashtag #SilkRoadToons since mid-March.
Along with raising awareness, the project aims to promote sustainable tourism and increase appreciation for the culture and history of the region. Viewers can see illustrations of Kazakhstan's sites, like Saryarka, West Altai region, Altyn Emel park, as well as traditions, such as the dombra, Kazakh kures (wrestling), traditional assyk games, and spring rites of horse breeders.
All illustrations on the intangible cultural heritage of Central Asia are expected to be published soon in handbooks for the youth and methodological toolkits for teachers.
