Claustro: Kazakh Thriller Wins Best Film Award at Boston SciFi Fest

The claustrophobic horror tells the story of two people seeking escape from a locked-up apartment

Kazakh thriller Claustro directed by Olzhas Bayalbayev won the Best Film award at the Boston Science Fiction Film Festival, QazMonitor reports citing the press service of QARA Studios.

Blurb: The main characters, Kema and Max, find themselves locked up in this apartment, unable to get out and contact anyone from the living. As they seek escape, they face new obstacles every time - the further, the scarier and more confusing. The movie is based on Tenants — a novel by Alexandr Mendybayev.

Production and release: The movie was shot in 2021 and released in September 2023. It is rated 5.5 on IMDb (36 user ratings), and 6.1 on Kinopoisk based on over 19 thousand ratings. Claustro was produced by Kazakhstan-based QARA Studios founded in 2017 by Aisultan Seit. The studio’s portfolio has such feature films as Zere and QASH.

About the festival: Boston SciFi is a cinematic event held annually. in February. In 2024, SF49 held a hybrid event: virtual on Filmocracy streaming platform and live at Somerville Theatre. The festival hosted about 30 feature films, 80 shorts, and 10 workshops and panels.
