Yana Skopina’s debut film, Summer Ends Soon, following the coming-of-age story right at the turn of the millennium, has been selected for the competition program of the 33rd FilmFestival Cottbus in Germany, QazMonitor reports.

The movie follows the story of a young Bakha during one fateful summer in 1990 when all of the Soviet Union lived by the words of the cult band Kino, “I want changes!” The shy young man lives his life as the wind of change sweeps everything around, but he has only one thing on his mind – his first love.

The nod to the turbulent 90s and the love in ‘small town Kazakhstan’ was selected to compete in the U18 Youth Film Competition program, which focuses on stories that depict young people's ever-present search for identity in the face of a rapidly changing world.

On November 7-13, the German city of Cottbus will host the 33rd edition of the eponymous FilmFestival Cottbus, bringing together the film industries of Eastern and Western Europe. Last year, Kazakh filmmakers were one of the focal points of the program, featuring the works of Serik Aprimov and Murat Nugmanov.
